Massage therapy is one of the many medicinal practices that has an ancient history and has transcended thousands of years. It is still used in modern times, though some cultures tend to practice entirely different techniques while others blend traditional and modern ideas. Chinese culture even considers it a significant factor in maintaining proper health--clearly, it is not a practice that is taken lightly.

In its practice, massage therapy essentially means physically stimulating the muscles and tissues both superficial and deep beneath the skin. These movements, depending on which technique is being practice, could mean simply employing motion onto the muscles, or it could mean applying vibration or tension to them. The target of these movements ranges from tendons, muscles, and ligaments to even gastrointestinal organs.

Depending on a person's ailments, aches or pains, the benefits of a massage may vary. This does not necessarily mean a person needs to be symptomatic in order to benefit from one. In general, this practice reduces anxiety, encourages relaxation and promotes good mental spirits. By applying pressure with elbows, knees, hands and feet, the masseuse knows where to target that will release the most tension.

Studies show that there are many advantages to receiving this practice. As demonstrated by the fact that it is commonly used in treating injured or strained athletes, it is a good way to promote pain relief and strained muscles. A person can also experience reduced blood pressure, a feeling of relaxation, and relief from anxiety. Research also suggests that consistent sessions may prove to have long-term results like more permanent pain relief and even reduced risk of certain diseases.

Serotonin and endorphins are two chemicals released by the body that promote an elevated mood and higher energy levels. Massage can encourage the parasympathetic nervous system to dictate higher releases of these hormones. Anyone who has scarring or an excessive production of connective tissue will see improved results in these areas with the help of massage. It is also a simple solution to feeling relaxed enough to get more sleep, which has many of its own benefits.

Needless to say, the advantages each person will reap from massage therapy are going to vary from person to person. It obviously cannot provide relief for symptoms that a person does not have. However, every person can benefit from the practice in a number of ways, since it does promote relaxation and the reduction of tension in the muscles. Overall, it helps to promote a healthier body and lifestyle.
